Selecting the right vehicle for you

Some points to consider when selecting a vehicle

By Simon Greg

What type of vehicle do you require?

With so many vehicles on the market, it is important to find a vehicle that meets your requirements. The main key areas to think about include;

How many doors do you require? And if you do require a 4 door, how often will you be carrying passengers in the rear. If you have elderly passengers they may require the comfort of a door, but young children should not be too phased by having to crawl into the back every once in a while. 2 door vehicles are often $1000-1500 cheaper than the their 4 door equivalents.

How much cargo carrying capacity do you require? Its incredible the range in carrying capacity between different car makes and models. Manufacturers usually publish the boot capacity in litres. Perhaps you need more room, so a 4wd or a SUV or even a Ute may be more appropriate. Don't forget you can always hire or purchase a trailer to increase carrying capacity

What type of driving will you be doing? Inner city driving tends to favour smaller vehicles due to the amount of stopping and starting plus the smaller parking bays. If you are doing a lot country driving you may wish to consider something with a bulbar or other safety equipment

Will you be doing any towing? If so, you will require a vehicle with a towbar. Additionally, depending on what you are towing you may require a vehicle with sufficient engine capacity to be able to handle your towing requirements.

Will the car fit in your garage or parking area? It is important to check the height and the length of the vehicle to ensure suitability.

Do you require a 4wd? Over the past decade we have seen an explosion in Australia in the number of motorists driving 4wds. Often many of these drivers will never take their vehicles off road. Whilst the benefits of increased safety and storage capacity of a 4wd is highly attractive, these must be balanced with the higher costs of maintenance and the higher initial purchase price of such vehicles when compared with a passenger vehicle. Financing an old 4wd can be problematic when compared with a similar priced passenger vehicle. For this reason it is important to ensure a 4wd is really required particularly if you are having to look for an older 4wd due to budget constraints.
